Sketch
Jul. 1st, 2009 | 06:01 pm

Sketched this of Jeremy while he was in the pool at a hotel across street from Disneyland. Not easy to sketch when he was swimmin' around.

Sketched this on flight back to Ohio. It was the only thing to keep me sane while surrounded by screaming kids.

Green Fairie
Jun. 14th, 2009 | 08:14 pm

Dale and I stumbled across a bottle of Absinthe on Friday night. Getting halfway through the bottle was much more of a feat than I imagined it'd be - not for 110 proof, but rather it tasted like shit. Seriously, black licorice? Ugg. No green fairies, though, only a couple fireflies.

Frailing Baritone Ukulele
May. 31st, 2009 | 09:03 pm
Came up with this bit last night around the camp-fire. Trying out frailing on the baritone ukulele and mixing in slides, phantom hammer-ons, and drop-thumbs. A fun little gimmick.

Not my finest, but I'm oddly really very happy with how I managed to ink the finger nails. Weird, hunh?

Is anyone still using LiveJournal anymore? I like Facebook and all, but it seems a little less personal. And I still don't quite get Twitter.

Wrote this last night before falling asleep...
I think this melody is a sub-conscious blend of Van Zandt and Cloud Cult.
capo at 5th

i have [am]seen all these rivers
i have [am]seen all these fields
i have [c]seen the glowing tide
i have [em7]seen the dead of night
and [am]all these things are beautiful
and [am]all these things are you
[c]oh, holy
[em7]night
i've [am]scaled the mountain steps with you
i've [am]swan in these strange seas with you
i've [c]flown the skies of pakistan
in [em7]temples, mosques, and holy lands
and [am]all these things are beautiful
and [am]all these things are you
[c]oh, holy
[em7]night

i've [am]been too poor to pay for food
and i've [am]tasted shark fin soup
i've [c]been too high to talk to you
i've [em7]been too sober, too
and [am]all these things are beautiful
and [am]all these things are you
[c]oh, holy
[em7]night
i've [am]walk in fog so thick
in the [am]early morning hours
i've [c]handled my addictions
and [em7]replaced them with another
and [am]all these things are beautiful
and [am]all these things are you

Oh, and there's a slight chance we're moving to Portland...

Having fun with finger picking. It's a bit quiet, I was pretty happy with the first take, so there it is. Chords: Em, B-not-quite-7th, G, A, C

A Decemberists Cover on Uke
Mar. 22nd, 2009 | 11:59 am
I love the lyrics to this one. It's less about love than escaping one thing or another. I think. I can't help but sing this with a bit of sarcasm. I've been practicing this one for a while, but couldn't make the vocals work until I dropped the key a few octaves. Man, oh man, I love playing songs on my uke - it's so easy to transpose keys with those baby-barre chords. And it suites my brutal style of strumming.

Hi friends. It's been a while. I've been reading your stuff, but I've been too busy (lazy) to cross post the stuff I put on facebook. I know. I suck.
That said, here're a couple songs I done did with my new ukulele and some banjo:
Original song: Singing on the Sunny Side of the House
Finger Picking Fun
Weezer Cover: Pork & Beans
An akwardly bad cover of a Munly song: Goose Walking over my Grave
Original: Some Silly song about Spring
Monkees Cover: Not your steppin stone
White Stripes cover: Little Ghost

The Fire of 1985
Jan. 31st, 2009 | 09:51 pm
This song's about the contrast of a recent zealous conversation I had about the "end of the world" and the fear I had about the world ending when I was 10 years old. In 1995 in the Ojai Valley, CA we were surrounded by a fire that filled the sky with so much smoke it was raining ash. The sky was red and the sun looked like something I envisioned from Revelations. For the record, I would rather spend energy enjoying the time I've got than worry about what may or may not happen.
Thanks to Neal for his help with figuring out the chords. The version he recorded with his tenor guitar is much better. Next time I play this, I'll slow down the tempo, I think I nearly busted a lung.
The Fire of 1985 (capo at 3rd or 2nd fret)
intro:
[G][G][D][D7]
Gotta [G]call from my brother the other day
He [G]said Armageddon is on its way
Gotta [D]call from my brother the other day
[D7]Hey Armageddon is on its way!
chorus:
[C]If you take my advice
[G]Get on a plane tonight
[D]If you watch then news and sing the blues
[D7]And believe the noise that they call Truth
[G]Armageddon is on the way
Maybe [G]Jesus, baby, he lost his way
He's [D]comin' back soon that's what he said
So [D7]rend your clothes and shave your head
chorus
[G][G][D][D7]
[C][G][D][D7]
It was [G]1985 and the mountains were on fire
It [G]started raining ashes and the sun was looking dire
We [D]loaded up the station wagon, Dad forgot his keys
Every[D7]body headed West towards the ocean and the beach
[C]Don't tell me how
[G]The world will end
[D]We really thought
[D7]The world would end
The [G]pastor at the pulpit said you better watch your ass
[G]Get your things in order; Tribulation's coming fast
We [D]read the book of Daniel; we knew the seven signs
We [D7]prayed the Lord our souls to keep in these ending times
[C]Don't tell me how
[G]The world will end
[D]We really thought
[D7]The world would end
[G][G][D][D7]
chorus
intro:
[G][G][D][D7]
[G]
